Cordless Lawnmower: Which Lawns Are They Suited For?

A cordless lawnmower is ideal for smaller lawns. Of course, the battery power/charge time will dictate just how long it can operate before it dies on you. For the most part, batteries will retain a charge from 30 minutes to 1.5 (or 2) hours max! Batteries usually run between 18 and 120 V. EGO’s Power + lawnmower has a 56-volt battery, lasting about 45 minutes on a single charge (If you select the bare tool, you will need to get the battery separately). You can estimate this is powerful enough to get you through 0.10 to 0.25 acres on a single charge. Therefore, a cordless mower is the best option when you’re mowing smaller lawns.

3. American Lawn Mower 14″ 11-Amp 120V – Best Electric Corded Mower Review

Lawnmowers come in all shapes and sizes. There’s seated, push mowers, robotic, and zero-turn varieties. Then, you have gas, electric (cordless vs. corded), and propane models to choose from. Or, is a battery-operated mower right for you? The questions never end!

Here we’ll review the American Lawn Mower 14″ 11-Amp 120V Corded Mower’s features, design, and uses to help you determine if it’s the right mower for you and your outdoor needs.

Why & When Should You Use an Electric Lawnmower?

Okay, the first thing we’ll cover is why you should choose an electric lawnmower? You don’t like mowing the lawn, and you’re not alone. It’s more of a chore than something homeowners look forward to doing. Electric lawnmowers are beneficial in that

• They make it easier to mow the lawn because they’re doing the heavy lifting
Electric lawnmowers don’t require as much maintenance as gas (no oil changes, no need to replace spark plugs, no fuel filters to change)
• They’re Eco-friendly and will save you time when mowing the lawn
• Many models today feature high-efficiency, powerful-amp motors, so you don’t have to exert much force mowing the lawn

An electric lawnmower is also more affordable than a gas-powered lawnmower. Therefore, the budget-conscious shopper is going to find this superior alternative as well.

What Lawns are Best-Suited for Electric Lawnmowers?

Next, we’ll focus on the type of lawns an electric lawnmower is best suited for. An electric push-mower is the perfect option for a small to medium-sized lawn. If you’re dealing with an area between 0.25 to 0.5-acre, electric lawnmowers are the superior alternative. Additionally, electric lawnmowers are best for lawns that are flat or have a minimal incline. If you’re dealing with an uphill battle, gas powered might be the top choice.

The size aspect also depends on whether you’re dealing with a corded or cordless electric lawnmower. A corded lawnmower limits you to the length of the cord (and extension). Although you don’t have to charge it, you have to be careful and avoid running over the cord, and also limit your mowing area to the length the cord can cover. Conversely, cordless lawnmowers can reach further distances, but they might require you to recharge before you can finish mowing the lawn.

Now that we’ve narrowed down the size of lawn you will be using the corded lawnmower for, why is the American Lawn Mower a good choice when investing in a new lawnmower? Let’s see what the primary selling points are, and what primary customer complaints you need to consider before investing in this product.

Pros

Some key selling points that we like about this lawnmower include

1. It has a powerful 11-amp motor; for smaller lawns, homeowners won’t find much better.
2. It’s Eco-friendly and efficient; no gas, oil changes, replacement filters, or high repair costs to worry about.
3. American’s push-start motor means no finicky pull cords or trying to rev up the engine. It starts every time, and it’s ready to go when you are.
4. It features a brushless motor, that’s as powerful as a gas lawnmower, minus the price tag of a gas lawnmower.
5. There are 5-adjustment levels for grass cutting height between 1-inch to 2.5 inches.
6. The large cutting width expands 14 inches, so you’re targeting a large radius, meaning you’ll have to go back and forth over the same area fewer times than with smaller lawnmowers.
7. A grass bag is included and it features a level indicator, so you always know when you need to empty it (the grass bag is 16 gallons, so you can usually get through the entire lawn before emptying it).
8. The lawnmower has a mulching system and side discharge system, so the grass never flies back in your face/towards your body.
9. You can attach the corded lawnmower to an extension cord, for lawns longer than 50-feet (anything longer will result in a drop of voltage).
10. It includes a 2-year warranty with your purchase, protecting the motor/parts from defects.

The lawnmower offers a nice set of features customers will appreciate if they’re choosing a lawnmower for smaller lawns.

Cons

With several great selling points, what are the primary drawbacks?

Some issues include

11. It’s corded so you’re limited in the length of the lawn you can mow.
12. It’s not as powerful as gas lawnmowers; although it packs a powerful 11-amp motor, gas lawnmowers are still more powerful (although not as Eco-friendly, and they require far more upkeep).
13. It might not be powerful enough for uphill mowing if there’s a steep incline in your yard.
14. It’s not as powerful as other lawnmowers, so pebbles, stones, twigs, or other debris, might cause a drop in power, and may result in poor cutting finishes when mowing lawns.
15. If the grass gets too tall (anything higher than 2.5’’), you’re going to have to work harder to work through the lawn; the mower does adjust in height, but only up to 2.5’’, which isn’t as much as other lawnmowers.

Overall, we can see the pros outweigh the negatives. And, the affordable price tag, also makes this a worthwhile investment for homeowners who have a smaller lawn to maintain, and are shopping for a corded-electric lawnmower.

9. Husqvarna Z242F Review – Best Hydrostatic Zero Turn Riding Lawn Mower for 3 Acres

A zero-turn lawnmower (ZTR) is more powerful than any lawnmower you can buy. It’s faster, can cut through more grass in less time, is great for edging, working around obstructions, and if your lawn has steep hills or inclines, it’ll get through them easily. So, why doesn’t everyone invest in one? They’re expensive, hard to maintain, and they’re best suited for commercial work. In our review of the Husqvarna Z242F we’ll discuss the best and the worst aspects of this lawnmower, and how it can help you if you’re mowing a 3(+)-acre lawn.

When Should You Use a ZTR?

The uses for a ZTR mower are few and far between. Yes, they’re more powerful, faster, and will do the job of mowing the lawn in a fraction of the time it would take a push, cordless, or electric mower. But, the price is something most homeowners can’t afford. A ZTR is suitable for situations where

• Lawns are 3 acres or larger
• You’re mowing a lawn with steep uphill grass, sharp blades, thick grass, or obstructions in the way
• You’re facing those lawns with multiple turns and edges (a ZTR can easily maneuver around tight corners and edges quickly and easily)
• It’s a commercial job for a client

Yes, you can use them for lawns that are smaller than 3 acres. However, they’re not necessary. You can get a riding mower for these lawns.

The Good & the Bad Aspects of Owning a ZTR

Zero-turn mowers are spectacular, powerful machines. They’re capable of more than any other lawnmower you can buy. But, with the good also comes a few negative aspects that you need to consider. Primarily, the high price tag you’re going to pay for a zero-turn lawnmower!! We’ll cover a few of the primary drawbacks and benefits here.

Pros

The best aspects of owning a ZTR includes

1. They’re capable of completing 360-degree turns
2. You can edge, trim, and easily maneuver around tight corners
3. They’re powerful and can make it up the steepest hill or incline without a hitch
4. Most are fitted with a motor rated at 15 HP or higher
5. These mowers can achieve speeds of 5 MPH or higher
6. The stainless steel design, sturdy construction, and powerful mowing base makes it easy to get through the toughest mowing jobs
7. You can mow in forward/reverse directions

The Cons

What do consumers dislike?

8. They’re not suitable for slopes that are 15 degrees or higher because they can tip over
9. They’re expensive (to buy and maintain)
10. They’re not fuel-efficient and they’re not Eco-friendly

What we Like About the Husqvarna Z242F

Now for the Husqvarna Z242F. If you’re considering this zero-turn mower, there are several aspects we like. Yes, it is quite expensive, but it’s a worthwhile investment for many consumers.

a. Speed & Mowing Options

This lawnmower can achieve speeds of up to 6.5 MPH mowing forward, allowing owners to mow up to 2.2 acres in one-hour. There are six cutting-height steps (1.5″ to 4’’ grass height options).

b. Drive System & Engine

The lawnmower has a Kawasaki hydrostatic 18-HP engine. The four-cycle engine will get through the thickest grass blades in no time. A hydrostatic drivetrain operates efficiently, allowing owners to complete their lawn care duties easily and without having to do any heavy lifting/pushing themselves.

c. Features

Some nice features you’ll appreciate include

• A high seatback for extended comfort when mowing
• Removable footplate
• A bumper and rear engine guard
• Rugged frame-casters
• Convenient deck lift and cup holders

The rugged design will outlast any riding, electric or cordless mower today. This mower will last a lifetime as long as owners maintain it regularly.

d. The Warranty

You receive a 3-year warranty covering parts and the engine. The warranty is limited, however, to homeowner use. If the ZTR is used in a commercial setting the warranty is voided.

Is This Model a Worthwhile Investment?

Yes and no. We like it for large lawns, with multiple edges, rugged terrains, and thick grass. If your lawn is any smaller than 3 acres, however, it might not be a good investment option. You can’t beat the quality, design, or ruggedness. But, the ZTR isn’t needed for most traditional home lawns. If you can spring for it, and want a top-of-the-line model, the Husqvarna ZTR is a great buy.

14. GreenWorks Push-Reel Mower Review – Best Cheap Lawn Mower for Small Flat Terrain

A push-reel lawnmower isn’t typically the first option on most people’s lists. However, it’s a suitable one for many homeowners. Especially if you have a small lawn, flat terrain, and grass that’s easy to maintain. Here we’ll cover the GreenWorks 16-inch Reel Mower, to help you decide if it’ll work for your lawn care needs.

Push-Reel Mowers: Savings

A push-reel lawnmower is the most affordable option available to homeowners who are looking for a new lawnmower. This model has an inexpensive price! There are many ways in which your new lawnmower will save you money including

• No gas, oil, fuel changes, filter changes, or maintenance (gas-powered mowers)
• You don’t have to replace batteries
• There’s no electrical usage, meaning you can reduce electric bills (corded mowers)

Plus, you can get a great workout in while mowing your lawn. Since you’re delivering the horsepower (man/woman power), you’re the engine behind your lawnmower. You’ll never have to worry about paying a service shop hundreds of dollars to repair parts or replace them; nor will you have to service the engine with these lawnmowers. Over the useful life, you’ll save hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, by choosing a push-reel lawnmower.

What Lawns can you Mow?

This is probably the biggest restriction as it pertains to owning a push-reel mower. You’re greatly limited in lawn size/type. The GreenWorks lawnmower weighs about 32.5 pounds, therefore, it is lighter than other lawnmowers. However, you have to remember that you’re doing all the pushing and exerting the force. There’s no engine to help propel you uphill or through long, winding lawns. These lawnmowers are suited for

• Flat terrains
• No obstructions or few obstructions
• Thinner grass blades (although you can mow thicker grass with the lawnmower as well)
• Smaller lawns, between ¼-acre to -acre (largest)

You can use the lawnmower on larger lawns or going uphill. But, it’ll take a toll on you. If you have a flat, small lawn outside your home, you can’t go wrong with a push-reel mower.

Pros & Cons of Using a Push-Reel Mower

Here we’ll cover some of the best and the worst aspects of owning and using a push-reel lawnmower, like the GreenWorks 16-inch model.

The Pros

The best aspects include

1. They’re Eco-friendly
2. They don’t emit gases, noxious odors, or other toxins into the environment
3. You don’t need to use gas or electric power to power the mower
4. You can mow any time (but, you should mow the lawn when it’s dry if possible)
5. The lawnmower is safe, quiet, and easy to operate
6. You don’t have to do costly maintenance work

Lawnmower Cons

The primary drawbacks include

7. You’re doing the work, you have no engine/power to help you
8. It’s difficult to mow thicker grass or lawns with roots/weeds
9. If there’s sand or twigs in the lawn, you might slip (limited traction)

Apart from the lack of power, and the fact that they’re intended for small lawns, there aren’t many issues customers note with these systems.

15. American Lawn Mower 14” Review Best Push-Reel Mower

If you’re shopping for a lawnmower, one of the many categories available is the push-reel lawnmower. Many homeowners stay away from them for one reason alone… they have to do the work! However, you shouldn’t be afraid of the push-reel mower, especially if your lawn is small. It’s a superior option, does the job right, and it’s the most affordable of the lawnmower categories available. In this piece, we’ll review the American Lawn Mower 14’’ that comes at a low price.

Push-Reel Mower User Guide: Best Suited Lawns

Not all lawns and lawn care maintenance can be mowed by a push-reel mower. They’re best suited for

Smaller homes and gardens
• Areas which are flat and straight
Narrow lawns with few plants, trees, and other obstructions
• Terrains which have smooth, soft grass blades that are easy to push through

You don’t want to buy a push-reel mower for a 5-acre plot of land, with a steep incline. You’re not going to get the job done! Well, you might, but it’ll take you several days to finish. A push-reel mower is ideal for lawns that are ¼-acres in size or up to 1-acre at best.

Benefits & Drawbacks of a Push-Reel Mower

There are several reasons you should consider a push-reel mower instead of an electric lawnmower. But, there are also some drawbacks, we’ll cover the good/bad here.

The Good

Some primary reasons we like push-reel mowers include

1. They’ll make your lawn look nice, even, and well-manicured (grass blades grow back in evenly after mowing)
2. They’re quiet and Eco-friendly; there’s no gas, oil, or harsh odors emitted when mowing the lawn
3. The lawnmower is easy to use. There’s no push, pull, crank, or gripping required, you’re the force behind it and you determine how fast it goes
4. These mowers are safe; the only danger is touching the blade, and you wouldn’t do that
5. There’s no maintenance, motor, or filters to service/replace
6. They are cheap!

And, if nothing else, you’re getting a great workout in since you aren’t relying on an engine/motor to help you out when you’re nearing the end of the lawn.

The Bad

The drawbacks we’ll mention are

7. Twigs, stones, or other obstructions don’t play nice with push-reel mowers (they can easily get jammed in the cylinder/blade)
8. It takes longer to mow the lawn and you don’t have the push behind you to drive the mower forward when you get tired

Top Lawn Mower Buyer’s Guide

When purchasing a lawnmower, you have several varieties including riding, electric, robotic, zero-turn (ZTR), and cordless. In this guide, we’ll help you decide which lawnmower is the best in each of these categories based on several variables.

1. How to select the best riding lawn mower?

When buying a riding lawnmower, several variables must be considered. You need to choose something powerful, a machine that’s easy to control has the right tires and one with a cutting deck that’s large enough to maximize efficiency and get the job done quickly.

a. Engine

engine-of-mowerWe’ll begin with the engine capacity. With riding mowers, you have rear-engine and tractors. A rear-engine lawnmower has an engine ranging between 190 and 540 CC. Conversely, a tractor’s engine displacement falls between 400 and 750 CC. For lawns up to -acre, a rear-engine lawnmower will suffice, anything larger (1-acre to 3 acres), you’ll want to choose a tractor mower.

You’ll also want to consider manual versus automatic transmissions. Manual transmissions allow you to modify the speed with a shift and clutch; automatic systems are similar to cars, they’ll speed up when you hit the gas and slow down when you step on the brakes.

b. Uphill Riding

mowing-golf-course-with-uneven-terrainA riding lawnmower is approved for uphill slopes as steep as 15 degrees; anything higher presents a challenge and danger for toppling over. A tractor lawnmower can be pushed up to 22-degree hills. You want to choose a lawnmower with a balanced center of gravity, even weight distribution, and make sure you know what type of surfaces you’re riding on, to prevent injury/toppling over, with these heavy machines.

c. Tires

wide-base-tires-for-lawn-mowerLawnmower tires should provide excellent grip on rough terrains and wet ground (although you should avoid mowing the lawn when it’s raining and until the lawn dries if possible). Tires should feature

• Turf protection tread
• A wide base
• Easy turning angles
• A durable body (multiple plies)
• A high weight capacity

You can modify the tires on your riding lawnmower if necessary, or choose a riding mower that has sturdy tires capable of challenging terrains.

d. Cutting Deck

riding-mower-cutting-deckThe cutting deck’s size is based on the lawn size you’re mowing. If your lawn is up to one-acre, a deck that’s 40’’ should suffice. For lawns up to 2 acres, a 42 to 46’’ deck is suitable, and lawns that are 3 acres may require a 50’’ cutting deck. Although this isn’t an absolute guide, it’s a good estimate to help reduce time requirements for mowing the lawn and ensures an even finish throughout the lawn.

e. Seating

You want a comfortable seat as well. Try to look for a lawnmower with

Padded seats
• A high-back design and lumbar support
• Adjustable height settings
• Armrests

Some lawn mowers also have built-in cup holders or additional cushioning to help reduce impact while riding. Depending on how much time you plan on staying on the riding lawnmower, and how large your lawn is, you might want something a little more comfortable and with more padding. Make sure to test out a few mowers, the comfort, and find something suitable for you.

Everyone is different. Therefore, what’s comfortable for one person isn’t necessarily right for the next. Test out several models to find the appropriate one for you.

f. Optional Features

Some additional variables you’ll want to consider/look for when choosing a riding lawnmower include

• Cruise control speed settings
• Deck wheels to help maintain even riding when turning
• Mulching and bagging capabilities
• Cup holders
• Footpads/rest
• Bagger attachments and optional attachments to help you work through tough lawns.

2. How to select the best electric lawn mower?

Now onto the electric lawnmower variety. As the name implies, these mowers operate on electric power. You’ll plug it into an outlet to produce power, and you’ll mow your lawn while it’s plugged in. Many electric mowers allow you to connect an extension cord, however, manufacturers suggest limiting extensions to 100-feet or less, to prevent losing power. So, a primary drawback worth mentioning with these mowers is the fact that you’re limited in length based on the mower’s cord length. There are cordless varieties, however, you’re limited to the battery-power and have to wait to recharge the battery before finishing mowing your lawn.

a. Corded or Cordless

good-to-select-the-cordless-lawn-mower-with-long-battery-life-spanAs highlighted above, your first decision with an electric mower is deciding between cordless or a corded model. A cordless mower is usually limited to the length of the cord, plus an extension (100-feet max) before you lose power/efficiency. Cordless mowers have a battery life usually between 30 and 60 minutes. You can buy a dual-battery cordless mower, and these can last up to 90 minutes on a single charge. In terms of distance, a corded mower is best for ¼-acre to 1-acre lawns, and a cordless model might operate up to 2-acre distances. Depending on lawn size, you’ll find one option is superior to the other.

b. Folding & Ease of Storage

These mowers store away easily when not in use. Before putting the lawnmower away you’ll

• Wipe it with a rag and clean off debris
• Make sure it’s dry and the engine’s cooled down
• Roll the cord (if corded) or put the battery on the charger (cordless)
• Fold the lawnmower away

It’s important to look for a lawnmower that can fold away easily. Most will fold from the handle and flip down into a small size, you can usually stick in the corner of a garage.

c. Charging/Battery Replacement

A great-quality electric lawnmower will last about 10 years if you maintain it regularly. You will have to replace the battery every few years to keep it operating at full capacity. Most lawnmower batteries will lose about 5% power per year (meaning year-two it’s at 95%, year-three 90%, and so forth). When you replace the battery is up to each owner; however, you shouldn’t wait more than three to four years to replace it, if you want your lawnmower to operate efficiently and produce the greatest mowing power. When comparing models, make sure you read the manufacturer’s suggestions regarding battery/replacement, so you can find a lawnmower that’s suited to your needs, and one that’s easy to maintain.

d. Safety

When it comes to safety, an electric lawnmower is as safe as any other lawnmower. The primary issues you’ll want to watch for are

• Plug or outlet (make sure the plug is UL-rated) can handle the lawnmower’s wattage
• The grass isn’t wet when mowing (electric shock)
• The battery is charged (cordless)
• You follow the manufacturer’s safety warnings.

You need to use your best judgment. Remember, electrical shock is possible with battery/electricity. So, make sure the conditions are right for mowing.

e. Battery Life

Here we’re dealing with cordless lawnmowers. Most feature a 2Ah to 4Ah battery. They’re capable of mowing for 30 to 60 minutes. And, the charge time for most batteries is 30 to 45 minutes (some offer optional quick-charge features). Some manufacturers sell dual-battery models, which will produce double the battery life. The price you pay and the battery manufacturer’s use will dictate how long the mower will operate on a single charge.

3. How to select the best robotic lawn mower?

Robotic mowers are newer to the family of traditional mowers. They’re efficient for small lawns, easy to operate, and they offer a primary benefit that no other lawnmower on the list offers. You don’t have to do the work yourself, the lawnmower does it for you! For homeowners who have a small lawn, and wish to set it and let it work on its own, this might be a good option to invest in when choosing a new lawnmower.

a. Battery-life & Uphill Mowing

robotic-lawnmower-for-uphill-terrainThe battery life of a robotic lawnmower will depend on the lawnmower. Every manufacturer uses different lithium-ion, rechargeable batteries. On average, you can expect 1-hour to 1 -hour mow time with the best mowers. In terms of charging time, it’ll take 45 to 70 minutes to fully recharge these batteries before you can fire them back up to do the lawn mowing for you.

In terms of uphill mowing capabilities, a robotic lawnmower isn’t capable of doing what a (ZTR) or powerful riding lawnmower is. However, it’s capable of making it gradient inclines of 8.5 degrees without any problem; all robotic lawnmowers can handle this. However, the most powerful mowers are capable of making it up a 14-degree gradient incline. This is nearly as high as a riding lawnmower (rated for 15 degrees). You’ll need to read the manufacturer’s label, warnings, and optional settings that allow you to adjust hill climbing/mowing, to determine what the best lawnmower is for you.

b. The Volume/Capacity

Some mowers are capable of cutting lawns above 1-acre. A robotic mower is suggested for lawns ¼-acre to 1.5 acres due to the battery life. Most won’t get jammed with grass, clumps, or clippings, because they feature thin blades, side discharge, and auto settings that detect clumping. Most mowers will also feature technologies to go in reverse and prevent jamming while mowing. So, as long as the battery’s operating, you can expect the lawnmower to handle any lawn, without getting jammed/clogged, similarly to other lawnmowers.

c. Cutting Deck

There are some commercial-grade robotic mowers with cutting decks as large as 44’’. However, the average residential lawnmower has a floating deck, allowing owners to easily adjust blade height/grass settings. The decks of most robotic mowers are about 22’’.

d. Safety Options, Automatic Settings, & Features

Every manufacturer is going to include different optional features and automatic settings to distinguish their robotic mower from the next manufacturer. However, most robotic mowers have

Auto shut off (safety feature)
Rain sensors to shut off if it’s dangerous to mow in those conditions
• Safety sensors to detect obstacles (prevent jamming or other threats)
• Auto shut off if the mower is lifted off the ground, or isn’t level

Then, there are some optional features that every manufacturer is going to implement, to try to get customers to choose their product over another one. For example

Smartphone control/operation
• Auto speed settings and incline adjustments to help save battery power
• Alexa voice-command options
• Work zone settings
• Adjustable blade/grass cutting heights
• Auto slope adjustment (some models up to 35% incline or higher)
• Anti-theft features (like PIN activation)

And, the list goes on. With more features and cool design elements, you’re going to pay a higher price for these robotic mowers. So, make sure you know what you need, that the lawnmower can handle the job, and set your budget accordingly.

4. How to select the best push reel lawn mower?

Now comes the push-reel lawnmower. The one with the fewest features and the most basic design. But, it does the job! When you’re dealing with a small lawn, between ¼-acre to 0.5-acre, with few inclines and obstructions, this might be the premier option to consider purchasing. They’re cheap, maintenance-free, and will last 10+ years if they’re well cared for. Plus, they usually have cheap price, it’s hard to beat! So, let’s go over what you should look for when buying a push-reel mower.

a. The Cutting Width

A majority of push-reel mowers have a cutting width of 14’’ to 18’’. This is one of the major drawbacks of purchasing these mowers. They’re much narrower than other varieties, that are at least 20’’ to 22’’ in width. However, the push-reel mower is intended for small lawns, flat surfaces, with few obstructions. Therefore, if you’re mowing a lawn that’s ¼-acre, you’ll probably work up and down the lawn three or four times (rather than two or three times) with these mowers. It’ll take a little more time and pushing, but you can still get the job done relatively easily. And, you can find some push-reel mowers with a larger cutting width if you shop around.

b. Adjustable Blade Cutting Height

You can adjust the blade cutting height on a push-reel mower. Most of them feature adjustable heights between 1-inch to 3-inch heights (every model will vary). To adjust the blade, you’ll remove the side screws on the lawnmower, and place them to the desired cutting blade height setting. Replace the screws onto the desired setting, and you’re ready to go.

It is a little more labor-intensive (and you might need a screwdriver to adjust), however, there’s no guesswork or difficulties you’ll encounter when trying to adjust the blades on your mower.

c. Ease of Use

These mowers are incredibly light, easy to operate, and require no maintenance or upkeep. There’s no guesswork when it comes to mowing your lawn with a push-reel mower. As the name implies, you’ll stand behind the lawnmower, and you’ll propel it forward/push it, to mow the lawn. There’s no engine or battery force, and no clutch you’ll hold onto, on the handle, in order to move the machine automatically. You move forward to mow, and the blades spin below to the desired height setting on the mower.

Why is this a superior option for small lawns?

• There’s no damage, no jamming, and no maintenance requirements (motor/engine)
• It’s straightforward, you walk forward and the lawnmower cuts the grass
• There’s no gas, oil, or other high-cost replacement parts

The primary drawbacks include the fact that you’re doing the manual labor. Additionally, push-reel mowers don’t like rocks, pebbles, or other obstructions. They’ll jam the blades and slow you down. So, you have to make sure you’re on even surfaces, on a smooth lawn, for these mowers to be efficient and effective.

d. Grass Collection

The push-reel lawn is going to leave grass clippings behind on your lawn. This is a great fertilizer for your lawn. However, most homeowners don’t want to leave the mess behind. If this is the case, you can buy a grass bag or catcher. These will collect the clippings while you mow, and you dispose of them when you’re done. Conversely, some push-reel mowers include grass catchers, so you don’t have to buy the optional attachment. And, some higher-end models, will come with a blower, so you can use this to remove the clippings left behind after mowing if you want a clean, smooth, evenly-trimmed lawn.

e. Safety

A push-reel mower is as safe as it gets! There’s no electrical cord, wires, battery, or the possibility of electrical shock when working on the lawn. Additionally, it’s not going to fall back on you if you aren’t pushing hard enough uphill, so no force will come back down on you. You have to use common sense, so you’re not going to stick your hand in the mower blade while it’s operating. Apart from this, and being careful when sharpening the blade (you can take it to a service shop to do this as well to prevent injury), there are no worries or safety concerns you need to worry about with these mowers. They’re safe, efficient, the no-fuss operation makes them great for small, flat lawns.

5. How to select the best zero-turn lawn mower?

The ZTR; it’s the very best when it comes to lawnmowers. But, are they worth the price? And, are they necessary for residential lawns? It depends on several variables, including lawn size and the slopes of the lawn you’re mowing. Here we’ll cover some basics as it pertains to choosing a ZTR and finding a suitable one for your lawn care needs if you choose to buy one of these systems.

a. Turning Radius

The turning radius of a zero-turn lawnmower is zero degrees. What does this mean when mowing the lawn? That you can turn anywhere, without difficulty, to evenly mow the lawn. The lawnmower is highly maneuverable, easy to work around tight edges, and can mow any lawn/grass.

b. Engine/Transmission

The ZTR uses either a hydrostatic transmission or rear-engine, which utilizes gear-based transmissions to operate the lawnmower. If a rear-engine transmission is used, a Hydro-gear transmission is fitted, to help power the ZTR efficiently.

A hydrostatic transmission is one that uses hydraulic fluids in order to automatically shift the gears. Think of an automatic car placed inside a lawnmower. They’re responsive, easy to use, and don’t require much maintenance.

The horsepower, RPM, speed settings, and fuel efficiency, are a few of the many variables that the engine/transmission will dictate. So, make sure you know how powerful it is, and what you’re getting before you choose your zero-turn mower.

c. Speed & Braking

The speed setting on a ZTR will vary based upon the manufacturer, the model, and the mower’s engine. Additionally, these systems go at different speeds whether you mow in reverse or riding forward. For most mowers, you can achieve a speed of up to 6 or 7 MPH moving forward, and 2 to 3 MPH in reverse. Again, every manufacturer will have different specs, so make sure you check this out before choosing your lawnmower.

Most zero-turn mowers don’t have a foot brake; you’ll utilize the handles to control speed and to brake the lawnmower. To slow down you’ll bring the handle back towards your body, towards a neutral position. A ZTR also has an emergency brake system. This is important in case you need to stop all of a sudden, or the steering handles aren’t operating as efficiently as you’d like them to. These machines have the best brake pads and stopping power, so you’ll never have to worry about not being able to stop when you have to.

d. Ergonomic Design & Comfort

When selecting a ZTR, ergonomic seat design is one of the primary selling points, over a riding mower. These lawnmowers have

• Adjustable lumbar and leg support
• Removable footpads and pedals
• Tall seat-backs
• Padded armrests
• Additional padded back and cushions
• Adjustment features for every rider

You might pay in excess of $3k to $5.5k for a ZTR, however, you’re riding in style and comfort. They’re ergonomic as well, so you can adjust them to your liking when you’re riding and mowing the lawn. Additionally, suspension systems help improve riding comfort and minimize impact on landing. Adjustable shocks and coils help improve stability. And, the overall design of these machines is intended to deliver maximum comfort and efficiency to get the job done in less time.

6. How to select the best cordless lawn mower?

The final category we’ll cover is the cordless lawnmower. We discussed these a little in the electric lawnmower category, so you have a basic understanding of how they operate. Here we’ll go a little more into detail about selecting the best model for your lawn mowing and lawn care needs at home.

a. Battery Quality

cordless-mower-with-top-quality-batteryThe higher the voltage, the more power you can expect from your lawnmower. For example, an 80V battery might mow on a single charge for up to 1-hour. Conversely, a 56V battery might only last 30 to 45 minutes. Depending on your lawn size, the battery voltage you’ll select will differ for every homeowner purchasing a cordless mower. It’s also important to consider variables like

• The charge time
• If there’s a dual-battery model (two batteries in one)
• How much power the battery loses annually (most batteries lose about 5%)
• The name-brand (some batteries are superior to others)

And, your budget. Cordless lawnmowers aren’t too expensive, you can get a good model for under $200 to $500. However, if you want more power and greater battery life, you’re going to pay a little more for your lawnmower. So, keep this in mind when deciding on how much battery power you need, and how big your lawn is.

b. Lawn Size Capabilities

A cordless mower isn’t restricted by cords; this is one of the primary selling points when comparing it to a traditional electric lawnmower. The only restriction is how long the battery will last before it dies on you when mowing the lawn. Generally, a cordless mower is ideal for lawns that are ¼-acre to -acre. If you buy a model that has an 80V battery, you can mow lawns up to 1-acre, without worrying about the battery dying on you. It’s important to note

Hills or steep inclines will drain battery life faster
• Obstructions, bushes, edging, and detail-work will also drain the battery faster
• Flat, smooth surfaces, are easy to work through
• The cutting width will impact the time required to mow the lawn

It’s not as easy as buying a lawnmower with an 80V battery and thinking it’s going to last 60 minutes so you can finish the lawn work. You have to think about these additional variables as well, so you can make an informed decision when selecting the right cordless lawnmower for your outdoor lawn care needs.

c. Blade Material & Cutting Height Adjustment

Most cordless mowers will feature adjustable cutting heights. They’ll typically fall between 1.5’’ to 3’’ (or 4’’). Every lawnmower has different height adjustment settings. And, the way you change the settings will vary slightly with each lawnmower. However, most of them will feature an adjustment knob or lever, allowing you to easily change the blade height.

There are different blades that are available for different mowers. These include

• Mulching blades
• Straight or flat blades
• Low or high-lift blades
• Deck and standard blades

A majority of manufacturers produce stainless steel blades. They’re easier to maintain, rust-proof, weatherproof, and are easy to sharpen. Additionally, these blades can cut through thick, dense grass, and work through obstructions in the lawn easier than subpar material finishes. Again, you’ll want to check with the manufacturer as to what kind of blade is installed in the mower, if you can adjust/modify those blades, and what the materials are. This will help you determine which lawnmower to purchase, and which cordless system is going to cut your lawn evenly when doing lawn work.

d. Grass Bag Capacity

On average, you can expect a cordless mower to have a grass bag capacity of two to three bushels. This figure will vary based on the size of the lawnmower, it’s mowing capacity if it has a mulching feature, bagging, and side discharge.

e. Optional Features

What about the optional features? What sets the best cordless system apart from the others? These are some optional features to look for when choosing a cordless mower

• Automatic speed/variable setting (based on the incline)
• Mulching and bagging
• Dual-battery and quick charging technologies
• A fixed battery key (so the battery can’t be lost/stolen)
• Quiet operation and a lightweight design
• Easy folding mechanisms and compact storage size
• Smart motor management
• Eco-settings, and so forth

Every manufacturer will include different optional features. The price you’ll pay for the lawnmower will vary based on those features, the mowing capacity, battery power, and engine capabilities. Also, the brand-name of the lawnmower will impact the price.

What’s the Best Lawnmower for you?

Lawn Mower Frequently Asked Questions

Self-propelled lawn mower: FAQ

If you’re planning on buying a self-propelled lawnmower, you want to make sure it’s the best option for your lawn and care needs. As a homeowner, there are several models you can purchase and many manufacturers that sell self-propelled lawnmowers. So, how do you know what to buy? Here we’ll cover a few questions and answers, regarding the use of a self-propelled lawnmower, to help you decide on whether it’s the right choice for you when buying a new lawnmower.

1. Can you push a self-propelled lawnmower?

A self-propelled mower is powered by a self-drive feature; however, if the feature dies, you can push the lawnmower safely. You aren’t going to damage the lawnmower, but it will require a little more force, as these mowers are heavier than a push mower.

What is a self-propelled lawnmower?

A self-propelled lawnmower utilizes a drive system to operate. You’ll squeeze a handle to operate the lawnmower and it moves forward on its own when you hold the bar down. It’s propelled by the engine.

Are push mowers difficult to push?

It depends on the size of the lawn and terrain. If you’re mowing a flat terrain with no obstructions, it’s pretty easy as they’re lightweight. If, however, you’re working uphill or on lawns larger than ¼-acre or more, it might become challenging.

2. How long do self-propelled lawnmowers last?

If maintained regularly, your self-propelled lawnmower can last between 8 and 12 years. Some manufacturers possibly longer. Every lawnmower has an hour-rating. If the rating is 400 hours, and you use your mower an average of 40-hours a year, it’ll last 10 years. Your use and the mower’s lifespan will dictate how many years it’ll last.

How do I extend the lifespan?

There are several ways including

• Mowing fewer hours per week
• Maintaining the lawnmower
• Servicing it when necessary

And, taking care of the parts/body to help extend the lawnmower’s useful life.

3. Are rear or front-propelled lawnmowers superior?

It depends on the areas you’re mowing. A front-wheel model is better for flat terrains and an area where you’re turning regularly around corners/edges to mow the grass. If you’re mowing a bumpy lawn, a front-wheel model isn’t a good choice. The wheels have to be firm on the ground to mow the lawn.

Conversely, a rear-wheel-drive mower is superior with uneven surfaces, inclines, or for uphill mowing. They have superior traction and are better for creating a manicured lawn. They’re more expensive, heavier, and require more maintenance, but they also deliver more power and drive.

4. How many hours will a self-propelled lawnmower last?

Every manufacturer gives its mower a different rating. And, they’ll have different service requirements. For example, oil changes, maintenance, updating parts, should be performed at certain hour markers. The best way to preserve your lawnmower is to make sure you’re servicing it at the suggested hour-mark by the manufacturer.

CC Engine and use time correlation?

You can expect a 160cc engine to work faster than a 120cc engine. It can do more in less time; CC measures the HP your lawnmower is producing. Therefore, the more powerful it is, the more force it produces, and the more it can mow in shorter periods.

Can I extend the mower’s battery life?

Yes; proper maintenance, making sure you buy the right battery size, and ensuring the battery/charger terminals are clean, are some ways to preserve battery life. Also, maintaining a full charge and making sure you service the battery when it’s recommended, is a couple of additional ways you can extend the battery life.

5. Can I mow wet grass with self-propelled lawn mowers?

Yes, you can mow the lawn when it is wet. However, it’s not advisable. Some reasons you should avoid mowing the lawn when its wet includes

• You can injure yourself (slipping, electric shock with electric mowers, unsafe conditions, etc.)
• The grass will clump and grow back unevenly
• It’ll get stuck below the mower deck and can get jammed in the blades
• You’ll leave ruts, divots, and other deviations in the lawn

When the lawn is wet, it’s going to lead to uneven cut and finishes. It’s best to wait until the lawn dries before you go out to mow it if possible.

Battery-powered lawn mower: FAQ

We will now answer some of the most common battery-powered lawn mower FAQs. The answers to these questions will help you know more about the battery-powered lawn mowers.

1. How long does an average battery-powered lawn mower last?

An average battery-powered lawn mower can last for five years. If you replace the battery after five years, generally speaking with little maintenance, you can undoubtedly double its life. A lot also depends on whether it uses a standard lithium battery or a lithium-ion battery. The latest batteries can last for a long time as well.
The parameters on which the life span depends include:

• Frequency of use
• Availability of overcharging protection
• Type of battery

Thus, if you’re using the lawn mower twice a week and are taking care not to overcharge the battery, it can last for up to 5 years, assuming that it is a lithium-ion battery.

2. Can we use battery-powered or electric lawn mower on rainy days and wet lawns?

It would be best if you do not use a battery-powered lawn mower or an electrical lawn mower in the rain or on damp grass. Doing so can be detrimental to the lawn mower itself. It can break it down, and after that, you will have to spend a considerable amount of money to fix it up.

It can also lead to a personal injury as these conditions are not conducive to the operation of the lawn mower. Simply put, an electric lawn mower or a battery-powered lawn mower is not designed for operation in damp conditions or monsoons. It is a good idea to keep it away from the lawn and store it in a cool and dry place during such season.

3. How to check the lawn mower battery?

The best way to test the battery of the lawn mower is with the help of a multimeter. It will let you know whether the battery has a dead cell or whether the battery is functioning correctly. We will go into the details of the step-by-step procedure below to help you understand how you can check the battery of the lawn mower.

• Step1 – You have to switch the multimeter to DC to test the battery voltage.
• Step 2 – You have to select the voltage setting to a level that is slightly higher than the battery voltage. For example, if it’s a 12 V battery, you have to choose the 13 V setting. You can check the label of the battery to know more about the voltage rating.
• Step 3 – You have to attach the probes of the multimeter to the battery. The red prop should go to the positive post, and the Black probe should go to the negative post of the battery.
• Step 4 – If the rating which the multimeter displays for a 12V battery is less than 10.5 V, you need to replace it. Similarly, for a 24 V battery, if the rating is below 21 V, you need to think about replacing it. If the voltage is higher than these levels for respective batteries, there will be no need to replace the battery.

When you measure the voltage of a rechargeable battery, it is a good idea to recharge the battery to the fullest and, after that, measure it. It will show you a more accurate reading.

The most accurate way to check the battery of the lawnmower is with the help of the procedure above. All you would need is a multimeter, which would make it very easy for you to know whether the battery has a dead cell or whether it is functioning correctly.

4. Are electric lawn mowers any good?

The electric lawn mower is undoubtedly much more reliable than a gas lawn mower. The advantages which an electric lawn mower offer are plenty like:

• The electric lawn mower has less moving parts under the hood. It means that the maintenance is on the lower side.
• The electric lawn mower does not result in the emission of gases. That is why they are ecofriendly.
• It is easier to charge an electric lawn mower as compared to store gas for a gas lawn mower. In this regard as well, they are better than other options.
• An electric lawn mower is easier to manage, as well. You have to recharge the battery from time to time rather than change the gas canister.

Due to all of these factors, an electric lawn mower is a better choice than a gas-powered lawn mower. If you’re contemplating to choose between both, it is better to go with the electric lawn mower since they are certainly better.

Riding Lawn Mowers: FAQ

1. How long do riding lawn mower last?

As long as it’s well-maintained, you can expect a high-quality riding lawnmower to last up to 20+ years. Most riding mowers are rated by hour/usage. For the best riding lawnmowers, you can expect up to 1,500 hours of useful or mowing life. Of course, depending on how frequently you mow the lawn and how long it takes you to do so, this 20-year lifespan will vary +/- accordingly.

What factors should we look at to get a more durable riding lawn mower?

Possibly, the most important factor you’re going to consider when picking a riding lawnmower is the type of lawn you’re mowing. Is it steep, are there obstructions in the way, or is it flat and smooth? Do you mow thicker or finer grass varieties? Once you have answered these questions, you’ll want to consider

• The cutting blade width
• The cutting deck material
• A powerful transmission
• Looking for a gear-drive transmission as they’re more powerful/last longer

Additionally, you’ll want to consider the manufacturer you end up purchasing when choosing your new lawnmower, as some brands are more durable and better made than others. These will last longer than a less-known brand lawnmower.

How to extend the life span of riding lawn mower

If you want to preserve your lawnmower’s life, you need to take care of it. Proper maintenance is a must. You should, maintain the blades and sharpen them regularly. You’ll also want to take the riding mower in for general tune-ups and service. Clean the blades regularly, check spark plugs, and make sure you replace air filters, oil filters (gas mowers), and other parts, when necessary.

Think of your lawnmower like your car. The better care you take of it, the longer it will last, and the greater the production it will give you over time.

2. How to store the riding lawn mower for the winter?

When the winter season approaches, you’re not mowing your lawn every day or every few days like you would in the summer. Therefore, you’ll want to store your lawnmower until the spring rolls around. Before you store the lawnmower you should remove the battery and clean the blades and mowing deck. When removing the battery you should coat the terminals to protect them from frost/cold. It’s also a good idea to add stabilized fuel to the engine for gas mowers. Gas can destabilize in as little as 30 days, so this can cause damage to the engine if you don’t have the right fuel in the tank, for those months while your lawnmower isn’t in use.

3. How long does it take to mow 1 acre with riding mower?

This answer will depend on several variables. But, for flat, even terrain, you can mow one-acre lawns with a riding mower in about 45 minutes; with a tractor mower, it should take about the time. This is a base answer; factors like the engine power, gas vs. electric mowers, the engine power, whether you’re mowing flat/steep terrains, and other factors should be considered as well. But, most one-acre lawns will take 45 minutes or less to mow with a rear-engine or a tractor riding mower.

How to speed up the lawn mowing process?

If you want to speed up the process, you can hike up the speeds at which you’re mowing the lawn. Most lawnmowers have variable speed settings; if you mow the lawn 5 MPH rather than 3 MPH, you’ll finish faster. However, a few additional tips to help you get the job done faster are

Start with hills, steep terrain, and obstructions first
• Choose a wide cutting blade angle as it covers more grass in less time
Try out different approaches and find what works for you

Every lawn is a little different, so the steps you’ll take when mowing will vary from household to household.

4. What is riding lawn mower clearance?

Clearance refers to the ground clearance below the blades and deck of your riding lawnmower. It’s how much space is available below the riding deck, where you can safely mow the area you’re working around, without something getting caught on the blades/mechanism.

5. What is the best month or date to buy riding lawn mower?

The best months to buy a riding lawnmower are

• April or May
• August, September, or October

Of course, certain times of the year promotions and clearance sales are held. However, these months are good because you’re either buying last year’s model for less (right before the summer), or you can buy a lawnmower for the upcoming year (at the end of summer). It’s always worth keeping an eye out for sales to find the best promos possible as well.

How to save money when buying the riding lawn mower (discount month, etc)

There are several ways you can save when buying a riding lawnmower. Some tips include

• Buy a used or refurbished model
• Choose a previous year’s model
• Buy during the off-season (check months in the previous answer)
• Look for a lawnmower with fewer accessories
• Buy an electric or corded lawnmower rather than gas-powered

Always look for discounts, contact dealers, and visit local showrooms where lawnmowers are sold as well. This will allow you to compare top models, and find the best deals when you buy.

Zero-turn Mowers: Q&A

1. What is the meaning of zero-turn? How is it essential for grass cutting?

Zero-turn refers to the turning radius of the lawnmower; it’s effectively a 0-degree angle that the mower turns at. It’s essential for mowing commercial lawns or areas where you want precision. It’s quicker to mow the lawn, and you’ll see fewer patches left behind when you mow your lawn with these machines.

2. Why zero turn lawn mowers are more expensive?

A: There are several reasons a ZTR is the most expensive lawnmower you can buy. Some reasons include

• They’re more powerful and can mow any type of terrain or grass
• They’re faster and can push through large areas of land quickly
• You can mow in different directions and angles effectively
• It’s multi-functional and the lawnmowers have no issues with obstructions or tight areas
• They save you time and they outlast any other lawnmower you can buy

3. What horsepower & cc do I need for zero turn lawn mower?

The more HP you have, the easier it will be to mow your lawn. On average, zero-turn mowers feature 18 to 20 HP. CC, or cubic centimeters, refers to the size of the engine the higher it is, the more HP your lawnmower will feature. A ZTR with 18 HP or higher, and 600 CC engine or larger, should suffice for most standard lawn mowing jobs.

What do horsepower and cc stand for?

HP stands for horsepower. HP is used to measure the power of a large engine in the ZTR. CC stands for cubic centimeters; this is the size of the engine in your lawnmower. Both of these figures measure the torque, or how much power and speed your lawnmower is going to deliver. The higher the HP and CC, the easier it is to get up hills, work through obstructions, or other challenges while mowing your lawn.

What’s the relationship between horsepower & cc?

These two aren’t the same. CC measures the engine size while HP measures the power produced by the engine. The type of fuel and how well-tuned the engine is will impact the ratio between HP and CC. These figures aren’t a direct correlation, but they measure two different aspects regarding the power of your lawnmower and the size of the engine.

Robotic Mowers: Q&A

1. Does a robotic mower work?

Yes; as long as you’re using it properly and choose the right one. For maximum efficiency, you should use your robotic mower a couple of times each week. They aren’t perfect, however. You might have to do some touch-up work with trimmers or hedgers. You’ll also have to do some extensive set up with your new robotic mower before it’s ready to go. As long as it’s powerful enough and has a strong enough battery, you’re good to go with these systems.

2. Is robotic lawn mower safe to use?

Yes, they have multiple built-in safety features. Every robotic mower differs a little, but they will feature

Collision detection systems
Auto-shutoff in cases where the mower blades are lifted off the ground/tilt
• Sensors that turn blades off in case of danger
• Shutoff capacity in rain or dangerous weather
• Back to base mode, where the mower goes back to its base after completing its job

Every lawnmower has different safety features, however, most are advanced and make mowing the lawn safe and effective.

What is the safety mechanism of most robotic lawnmowers?

It depends. Every robotic lawnmower is a little different. Some of the basic features include

• Auto-shutoff in dangerous areas
• Collision detection to move away from obstructions/dangers
• Anti-theft features
• Blade shutoff in case the blade is removed from the ground or is tiled up
• Alarms and PIN code setting, so you can limit who uses it (prevent kids from playing)
• LED lighting for safe mowing at night

There are also GPS trackers and other features to prevent theft of these costly systems.

3. How long does robot mower last?

The life expectancy of a robotic lawnmower is 10+ years; some models are rated for up to 20 years. As long as it is serviced regularly, well taken care of, and owners properly maintain it, the lawnmower should last as long as a traditional push-mower or riding lawnmower.

In terms of battery life, you can expect anywhere from 3 years up to 6 years, before you’ll have to replace it. Remember, most batteries lose about 5% power annually; so, by year-six, you’re probably at around 75 to 70%, rather than the 100% power it produced when you initially bought your lawnmower. So, it’s not as efficient as time passes, as it was when the battery was brand new.

How to extend the using time of a robotic lawnmower?

Maintain it! Again, similarly to a riding or push-behind mower, you’ll have to take care of your robotic lawnmower if you want it to last. You should

• Perform routine maintenance (read the manufacturer’s suggestion and have the mower serviced regularly)
• Check the battery and make sure it’s operating efficiently
• Clean the lawnmower regularly and remove dirt/debris from the blades
• Make sure the blades are sharpened regularly (manufacturer’s suggestions)
• If you see indicator lights or other warning lights, make sure you have the robotic mower serviced professionally
• Maintain it by cleaning, regularly charging it, keeping it in a safe place, and keeping it away from the elements (rain, snow, water, etc.) when it’s not in use

The more you take care of and maintain the robotic mower, the greater the life expectancy you can expect, and the more power you can expect from it over the years.

4. Can you use a robotic lawnmower in rain/snow?

Yes, technically you can. And, most robotic lawnmowers are rain and weatherproof. However, it’s not the safest thing you can do, nor is it advisable. You aren’t going to get even cuts, and it’s best to mow the lawn when the grass is dry for even finishes. Most lawnmowers aren’t going to work in the snow, however. And, if there are rain or thunderstorms, you shouldn’t use your robotic lawnmower (or any lawnmower) during this time for safety reasons.

Gas-powered lawn mower: Q&A

1. What kind of gas should I use in a gas-powered lawnmower?

Most four-stroke lawnmowers will take unleaded gasoline that has a rating of 87 octanes or higher. This, however, isn’t always the case. The best way to ensure you’re using the right fuel source for your lawnmower is to read the owner’s manual. In some cases, even the same manufacturer brand will require different types of fuel or gas, for different series of lawnmowers. In some cases, the engine can’t handle a specific octane-level, in other cases, you might have to use different types of gas for safety purposes. 87 octanes or higher is typically the suggested fuel source, but, it’s worth checking the owner’s manual before you fuel up for the first time to ensure you’re not going to do any damage to your lawnmower’s engine by using the wrong fuel sources in it.

2. How much is the gas for a lawnmower?

That will vary significantly based on current fuel prices. This is the driving factor as to how much you are going to pay per gallon of gas that you’ll place in your gas-powered lawnmower. To calculate how much you’re going to spend on fuel, you’ll multiply the price per gallon, by the total number of gallons that your gas-powered lawnmower can hold (usually two to four gallons with most lawnmowers). Then, divide this by the number of gallons you’ll need to mow the lawn (for a one-acre lawn, you’re looking at about ⅔-gallon of gas). So, each time you go out to mow the lawn, it’s going to cost anywhere between $1.50 to $4 or $5, based upon where you live, and the current fuel prices where you live.

3. Can we use car gas for the lawnmower?

Technically, you can. However, it’s going to cost more money and you’re probably wasting good fuel that you could and should be using in your car instead. Cars require 93-octane fuel or higher. As we mentioned in the previous answer, you only need 87-octane rated fuel for most gas-powered lawnmowers. So, it isn’t going to damage your lawnmower in most cases, but you’re likely wasting money if you choose to use gas you’d use in your car, for your gas-powered lawnmower. Again, we suggest checking with your manufacturer before you add any fuel to your gas-powered lawnmower for the first time. It’s the best way to ensure you’re using the right fuel grade, and that you’re not going to do any damage to the engine of your gas-powered lawnmower either.

4. How many gallons of gas does the lawnmower hold?

It will depend on the size of your gas-powered lawnmower. For example, a 38’’ to 54’’ riding deck mower, can typically hold anywhere from one-gallon up to three gallons of fuel. Smaller riding decks or larger decks are going to hold more fuel. For most gas-powered lawnmowers, you can typically fit anywhere from one-gallon (some smaller mowers might hold -gallon of gas), and this can go up to three to five gallons, based on the gas-powered lawnmower that you own and operate. Commercial mowers typically hold a higher amount of fuel than a residential gas-powered lawnmower will hold, so you also have to consider this factor when selecting a new lawnmower.

If you aren’t sure how much fuel you should or can add to your gas-powered lawnmower, your owner’s manual will inform you just how much you can safely add to your gas-powered mower.
